The RNE Program in Mexico Has Officially Ended
What Expats Need to Know
If you've been researching how to stay in Mexico long-term, you may have come across the RNE program (Regularización por Razones Humanitarias) a once-popular pathway that allowed many foreigners to transition from irregular status to legal residency.
But as of 2025, the RNE program has officially been discontinued.
What Was the RNE Program?
The RNE program offered a temporary residency option for people who:
Overstayed a tourist visa (FMM)
Had been living in Mexico without legal status
Met certain humanitarian or vulnerability criteria
It allowed these individuals to "regularize" their immigration status often without leaving the country -and was especially helpful during COVID-19 and post-pandemic periods.
What Changed?
In late 2023, Mexico's National Institute of Migration (INM) began phasing out the program. And by early 2025, it was no longer available in most states.
While some social media groups still reference it, RNE is no longer a viable option for the vast majority of people looking to apply for residency.
What Can You Do Instead?
If you’re planning a move to Mexico in 2025 or beyond, these are the most common legal pathways to residency:
Economic Solvency (via consulate appointment)
Family Unity (married to or related to a Mexican national/resident)
Job Offer or Mexican Corporation
Retirement or Pension Income
At My Deztination, we guide clients through every step, from choosing the right path to preparing documents, securing appointments, and understanding the legal requirements before you make the move.
final word
If you’ve been holding out hope for RNE, don’t worry - there are still legal and achievable ways to build your life in Mexico.
The key is to plan ahead, meet the requirements, and stay informed about evolving immigration policies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RNE program still available in 2025?
No — the Regularization for Humanitarian Reasons (RNE) program has been officially discontinued. While it provided a pathway for some foreigners to regularize their immigration status during COVID-19 and beyond, it is no longer accepted at INM offices nationwide.
Can I still qualify if I’ve overstayed my tourist visa?
There is no active program in 2025 that allows overstayers to apply for residency without first leaving the country. The RNE was previously an exception, but it has been phased out. Anyone without valid immigration status is encouraged to consult an attorney to understand their risks and next steps.
What are my options now that the RNE is gone?
Most people now apply for residency through:
- Economic Solvency (via a Mexican consulate)
- Family Unity (Unidad Familiar)
- Job Offers or Mexican corporations
- Marriage or Retirement pathways
What happens if I overstay my tourist visa now?
Overstaying your visa may result in fines, refusal of future entry, or legal complications. While some people attempt to “wait” for future programs, there is no guarantee one will open. It’s always safer to resolve your immigration status legally.
Can you help me find a legal residency option?
Yes — we work with vetted immigration attorneys across Mexico who help clients explore viable legal options. We’ll assess your situation and guide you toward the smoothest path. Book a consultation here.
Will a program like RNE return in the future?
It’s impossible to predict. The RNE program was a temporary solution during specific humanitarian conditions and has not been replaced. We closely monitor changes from INM and update our clients if any new programs are announced.
Can I apply for residency through a spouse or child?
Yes — the Family Unity (Unidad Familiar) program is still active. If your spouse or child is a Mexican citizen or a legal resident, you may qualify. We assist clients with the process, including gathering documents, translations, and INM appointments.
What’s the safest way to get legal in Mexico now?
The safest and most predictable path is applying for residency through a consulate in your home country. If you’re already in Mexico, speak with an immigration expert to understand your current options and avoid misinformation online.
