The RNE (Regularization for Humanitarian Residency) program has been paused. While many people had hopes of using this route, the requirements have changed significantly.
To qualify, you must have been living in Mexico continuously since December 31, 2022, without leaving the country—not even once. That disqualifies the majority of hopeful applicants.

The most common path now is financial solvency, which means applying through a Mexican consulate abroad. You’ll qualify either through monthly income (~$4,700 USD/month) or savings (~$72,000–$81,000 USD), ideally documented over the past 12 months.
Are some Mexican consulates easier to work with than others?
Yes—100%. Some consulates are stricter and more difficult to qualify through. Recommended consulates include Omaha, Houston, Indianapolis, and Denver. Avoid San Diego, LA, Seattle, and Chicago unless you’re confident your documents are airtight.
Is Puerto Vallarta a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQ+ individuals?
Absolutely. Puerto Vallarta is one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in the world, hosting the largest Pride celebration in Latin America. In Zona Romántica and beyond, people are welcomed, seen, and celebrated—not just tolerated.
Can I start a business in Mexico as a foreigner?
Yes. You can either apply for residency with permission to work, or open a Mexican corporation and hire yourself. You’ll also need to register with SAT (Mexico’s tax authority) and work with a local accountant.
Can I work remotely for a foreign company while living in Mexico?
Yes! This is one of the most common legal paths. If your income is entirely foreign-sourced, you typically won’t owe taxes in Mexico—but you may still need to report it. Residency is still required for long-term legal stay. Consult a cross-border tax advisor for best practices.
How do I choose between the income or savings route?
